A woman jumped into the Hooghly River near Jetty Ghat in the Diamond Harbour Municipality area of South 24 Parganas on Wednesday night. The incident took place around 9 PM. According to local sources and police, the woman suddenly leapt into the river during high tide and was swept away within seconds. Eyewitnesses immediately alerted the authorities.
Personnel from Diamond Harbour police station and the disaster management team reached the spot shortly after receiving the information. A search operation was launched in the river but continued late into the night without success. As of Thursday morning, the woman’s body had not been recovered. The search operation was resumed at daybreak.
The identity of the woman is still unknown. No personal belongings or documents were found at the site. The police have initiated efforts to trace her identity and determine the circumstances leading up to the incident. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being reviewed, and public assistance has been requested for identification.
